Wooden Wick Candle Care: Everything You Need to Know
Wooden wick candles offer a clean, modern burn and a soft crackling sound, but they require slightly different care than traditional cotton wicks. If you’re wondering how to trim a wooden wick, why your wood wick won’t stay lit, or how to prevent tunneling, this guide covers everything.
At Bayou Rose, we hand-pour each of our candles right here in the heart of New Orleans, the French Quarter. Even with the high humidity, we choose wooden wicks for their performance, ambiance, and even melt pool. Here’s how to care for yours properly.
Benefits of Wooden Wick Candles
1. Even Melt Pool
Wooden wicks create a wider flame, which helps melt wax more evenly across the surface. When burned properly, this reduces tunneling.
2. That ambient crackle
The gentle white-noise-like crackle creates an immersive and neutral atmosphere — perfect for evening rituals or slow mornings.
3. Cleaner, Controlled Flame
When trimmed correctly, wooden wicks produce minimal soot and a slow, stable burn
4. Elevated Aesthetic
The flat wooden wick adds a modern, architectural detail, while the even burn keeps your candle looking fresh throughout its life. No mushrooming, black soot, or insane tunneling. And with our self-correcting wax, even if you put your candle out before the melt pool is complete, the next burn will help reset the wax.
How to Trim a Wooden Wick
Before every burn:
• Let the candle cool completely
• Gently trim off the blackened char with a wick trimmer or your fingers. Nail clippers will also work in a pinch! (Don’t use scissors)
• Keep wick height around 1/8 to 3/16 inch
Proper trimming prevents:
• High flames
• Smoking
• Difficulty staying lit
The First Burn Matters Most
To prevent tunneling, allow the wax to melt fully to the edges during the first burn. This typically takes 2–3 hours depending on candle size. If the melt pool doesn’t reach the sides by that time, don’t fret. Our wax blend “self corrects” during subsequent burns.
Why Your Wooden Wick Won’t Stay Lit
If your wood wick keeps going out, check these first:
• Is the wick too short?
• Is there excess char buildup?
• Are you burning in a drafty room?
• Is the wax drowning the wick?
Allow to cool before relighting:
Hold a long lighter at the base of the wick for 5–10 seconds until the flame fully catches.

How Long Should You Burn a Wooden Wick Candle?
For best results:
• Burn 3–4 hours at a time
• Trim before every relight
• Stop use when 1/2 inch of wax remains
Following these steps ensures maximum burn time and strong scent throw.
